MERCEDES-BENZ F-CELL WORLD DRIVE REFUELS AT POWERTECH

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011, Surrey, BC – Three Mercedes-Benz F-CELL World Drive vehicles refueled at Powertech’s hydrogen fueling station during their global tour to promote hydrogen vehicle technology.

The Mercedes-Benz F-CELL World Drive recently travelled from Seattle, and then across the border to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, before heading to Australia. These vehicles have now covered Europe and North America, and will proceed to Australia as part of their four continent, 14 country, 30,000 km World Drive.

This week, Mercedes-Benz also announces their new fuel cell production facility in Burnaby, B.C. In early 2012, the facility will open to undergo testing and commissioning, followed by small-scale production of the next-generation fuel cell stacks in 2013.

The decision to establish a new production facility in Vancouver was expressed in the Mercedes-Benz press release as the “next logical step of Daimler’s successful cooperation with partners in Vancouver.” This partnership emerged through the Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation in Burnaby, a joint venture between Daimler (50.1%), Ford (30%), and Ballard (19.9%).
