HIGH VOLTAGE LAB
Mr. John Vandermaar directs Powertech’s High Voltage Laboratory under the T&D Technology and Testing group and is responsible for all activities of the High Voltage group including both field and laboratory studies. Mr. Vandermaar has 40 years of experience in problem solving in all areas of high voltage research. He was responsible for acquiring much of the laboratory’s high voltage equipment and since then has been responsible for design improvements and expanding the capabilities of the laboratory. He has undertaken on-site and laboratory testing, research and problem solving for power transformers, bushings, cables, sulfur hexafluoride equipment, and many other types of equipment.
As Principal Advisor of Powertech’s Cables Technology team, Dr. Khaled (Kal) Abdolall has concentrated on studying the aging phenomena of solid dielectrics cables, developing test techniques for condition assessment of in-service equipment, and microwave thermal imaging. He has been with Powertech for 37 years, and his contributions to engineering technology and practice include extensive work on development of methods for monitoring porcelain and polymer clad high voltage equipment by microwave imaging, development of aging tests for high voltage cables, and failure mechanisms and condition assessment of underground cables. He is the author and co-author of numerous publications and research reports, and has a patent on microwave thermal imaging.
Dr. Linfeng Cao is an Engineer with Powertech’s High Voltage Laboratory. He has worked extensively in field testing on underground cables with an emphasis on partial discharge measurements. In addition, he conducts a full range of qualification and certification tests in accordance with all relevant industry standards, as well as custom testing solutions.
Mr. Hamed Janani is a Project Engineer in the High Voltage group within the Transmission and Distribution sector at Powertech Labs. In this role, Hamed prepares and leads high voltage proposals and testing.
Hamed holds his PhD. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manitoba. He is a registered Engineer in Training with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia, as well as the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba.
