APPLIED CHEMISTRY & ENVIRONMENT LAB
Dr. Stuart Chambers is the manager of R&D, Investigation & Consulting, as well as a lead for the polymer and materials investigation facility in Powertech’s Stations Research & Development lab under the Substations Technology & Testing group. His areas of research and development include transformer diagnostics, insulating paper degradation, ageing properties of insulating oils, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) decontamination. He has completed substantial research into insulating solids, fluids and gases for Canadian Electrical Association (CEATI), Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), BC Hydro and other research organizations.
Dr. Chambers is a materials/analytical chemist with 15 years of experience and training. His areas of expertise and interest include materials preparation, alteration and characterization, and chromatography/purification.
Dr. Terry Gordon is a Scientist for Substation Services and Applied Chemistry within the Substations sector. He is responsible for SF6 unit testing, SF6 field testing services, and measuring SF6 gas compositions focusing on decomposition by-products and other impurities such as moisture. Terry’s research activities include investigations associated with SF6 capture and sequestering, as well as, degradation and failure of materials through lab-scale examinations.
As a chemist in Powertech’s Applied Chemistry lab, Mr. Weili Kang is responsible for projects and tests on insulating and lubricating oils, as well as laboratory and field tests for moisture and sulfur hexafluoride decomposition products in in-service sulfur hexafluoride-insulated equipment.
Mr. Jeff Lang is an experienced Chemical Technician in Powertech’s Applied Chemistry & Environment Lab. He joined the Applied Chemistry team in 1999 and managed the Oil Quality section, performing the analysis of insulating oil samples, and also assisted the Fuels and Lubrication section. Since 2011 Mr. Lang has worked in the Environmental Lab where he performs an array of tests on water and soil samples. He has served as Group Leader of the Environmental Lab since January 2015.
Dr. Ben Wang is a Chemical Technician for Applied Chemistry & Environment in the Substations sector at Powertech. In this role, Ben is responsible for operations in the asbestos lab and overseeing the daily run of analysis. This includes operating microscopes to analyze asbestos samples, communicating with subcontract labs for polarized light microscopic and transmission electron microscopic analysis, as well as reviewing analytical data and preparing reports for clients. Additionally, Ben maintains and repairs laboratory instrumentation and performs method validation and verification procedures to meet ISO 9001 and 17025 guidelines, including proficiency testing, and internal and external quality audits.
Ms. Jianshan Wang is an experienced Chemical Technician in the Chemistry Lab in Powertech’s Substations Department. She conducts a variety of chemical analyses on insulating fluids, oils and greases, and provides training to other technicians and technologists within the department and across the company. Ms. Wang also provides technical support, advice and assistance to scientists, project leaders and personnel from other business units.
