Failure Investigation and Forensic Analysis
Powertech Labs Materials Engineering Group offers detailed failure investigation of damaged equipment, systems and structures. We have investigated the cause of damage and sequence of events in many cases, including arson, vandalism, sabotage, fraud and warranty claims.
Materials Testing Laboratory
Powertech’s materials testing laboratory features extensive facilities providing a wide variety of services. Performing services such as failure analysis, material evaluation and development, and mechanical testing, the materials testing lab also functions as a support laboratory for various other services offered by Powertech. Our competent technical and professional staff offers experience with metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites to aid in testing and analysis for industry, government, litigation, insurance, and research purposes.
Vibration Testing
Powertech has two electro-dynamic shakers offering vibration testing and shock testing. This equipment has force ratings of 13,500 lbs with shock loads of up to 250 Gs. In addition to these services, we are able to combine vibration and environmental testing by incorporating both a small scale shaker and a Thermotron environmental chamber.
Cavitation Erosion Repair
Cavitation damage to hydraulic structures is a recurring problem for utilities. Serious damage can occur to components such as turbine runners, concrete spillways and draft tubes costing utilities thousands of dollars for repair and downtime.
Remaining Life Assessment of In-Service Components
Effective management of capital-intensive major equipment requires strategic decision-making as the equipment approaches the end of its anticipated useful life. The replacement alternative may involve the expenditure of millions of dollars. If maintenance can be performed to extend the life of the equipment, that expenditure might be postponed, having a positive effect on corporate financial performance.
Hydrogen Embrittlement Testing
With the emerging hydrogen fuel industry arises many complications regarding material compatibility issues. Powertech Labs has developed equipment to satisfy this mandate for very specific material testing in gaseous hydrogen environments.
