Cable Condition Assessment - The Whole Picture

Most utilities and industrial plants make extensive use of medium voltage cable. Cable designs vary in many ways, including:
- Insulation Material
- Metallic shield or neutral condition
- Jacketing
- Operating Conditions
High Power Lab
For efficient and cost-effective testing and certification of medium and high voltage products, Powertech offers a High Power testing laboratory to support electrical equipment manufacturers and power utilities.
Insulation Condition Assessment of Generators and Motors
With specialized expertise in generator and motor testing, we evaluate the quality of stator windings by performing voltage endurance (IEEE1043) and thermal cycling (IEEE1310) tests to ensure that your machine can achieve expected service lifetime. Other laboratory tests include: thermal aging (IEEE1776), multi stress, partial discharge; power factor, AC breakdown; turn-to-turn, dissection and microscopic examination of coils, insulation fed by inverters, insulation failure analysis and forensic services.
Transmission Class Cables and Cable Accessories Failure Analysis
Powertech’s multidisciplinary team performs failure analysis on all types of electrical equipment, including transmission class cables and accessories. Our expertise in electrical, chemical and materials engineering, as well as system analysis, and protection and control allows us to evaluate all aspects of a failure.
Distribution Class Cables
Powertech’s multidisciplinary team performs failure analysis on all types of electrical equipment, including distribution class cables and accessories. Our expertise in electrical, chemical and materials engineering, as well as system analysis, and protection and control allows us to evaluate all aspects of a failure.
Thermal Resistivity Testing
Powertech provides field and laboratory testing services to measure the thermal resistivity of native soils or backfill materials required for underground transmission lines, oil and gas pipelines, radioactive waste disposal, and solar thermal storage facilities.
Asset Condition Assessment Services
Powertech works with utilities to systematically ensure that their physical assets can, and do, perform to prescribed reliability, safety and environmental standards. Our state-of-the-art testing facilities also assist equipment manufacturers through their product evaluation phase to achieve certification and speed market readiness.
Non-Destructive Testing & Life Assessment
Powertech’s group of experienced Engineers and CGSB certified Inspection Specialists offers a complete set of traditional field and lab non-destructive testing (NDT) services to our customers. Powertech’s Materials Engineering experts perform NDT and life assessments for structures, equipment, and pressurized components. Assessments are performed considering brittle fracture, overload failure, stress rupture, fatigue, corrosion-fatigue, stress corrosion, and creep mechanisms.
Corrosion and Protective Coatings Services
Use of high performance coatings under rigourous specifications must be carefully inspected and monitored. Powertech's coating inspectors are NACE and SSPC certified. They provide inspections that ensure optimal performance of highly sophisticated coating systems. Environmental compliance is also monitored.
Powertech's coating inspectors also perform field inspections to assess the condition of structures and equipment for determining the coating condition and identifying the current and future maintenance requirements.
Analysis of SF6 Gas
The excellent dielectric and arc quenching properties of SF6 make it an ideal insulating gas for medium and high voltage applications. Detailed knowledge of the nature and amounts of SF6 contaminants and decomposition products can provide a useful diagnostic technique for in-service equipment. Such information is also essential to protect the health of maintenance personnel when handling SF6 gas and to assist with disposal or recycling of end of life equipment.
