BPA Technology Innovation Project on Ocean Energy Phase 1 Completed

February 27, 2008

Powertech Labs Inc. has completed the Phase-1 of BPA Technology Innovation project on ocean energy (tidal current and ocean waves). The final report, “An Assessment of Variable Characteristics of the Pacific Northwest Region's Wave and Tidal Current Power Resources, and their Interaction with Electricity Demand & implications for Large Scale Development Scenarios for the Region - Phase 1”, is available in the links given below. The project was funded by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), British Columbia Hydro (BCH), and British Columbia Transmission Corporation (BCTC).

Disclaimer

The broad objective of this project is to review the state of the technologies, grid integration issues, interconnection standards, and resource potentials pertaining to ocean energy in the context of the Pacific Northwest (OR, WA, and BC) coastal regions. The reader should, however, be aware that

  • A number of other issues cannot be discussed within the limited scope of this work. These include:
    • Environmental impact assessment
    • Cost assessment
    • Sustainability and life-cycle assessment
  • References to conversion systems (implied or explicit) are made only as examples and it is understood that it is neither possible nor appropriate to critique their design, operational, or performance features at the present state of this technology.
  • While various schemes have been reviewed to develop the numerical models of their representative generic classes (as part of forthcoming stage of this work), there is no intention to identify their commercial, technical, or non-technical strengths or weaknesses.
  • Due attention has been given in providing accurate information, citation, and high-resolution graphics. Any apparent discrepancy should be brought to the authors’ attention. Also, the reader may deduce his/her own conclusions based on the information provided in this report.
